Free, unbiased help: the federal Eldercare Locator connects you to your local Area Agency on Aging at 1-800-677-1116 (eldercare.acl.gov), and your state’s Long-Term Care Ombudsman advocates for residents of nursing homes, assisted living, and board-and-care homes — both at no cost, no sales pitch. For home-care and home-health concerns the Ombudsman’s authority is limited: the federal program’s mandate runs to long-term care facilities, though some states extend theirs to home and community-based care — ask your state program, and if it cannot help, raise it with your state’s home-health complaint line or Medicare at 1-800-633-4227.
